If there’s one thing about the days ahead of the NFL Draft, it is how things can run amok with speculations and new predictions every other week. It is officially the season of conjuring theories based on in-depth research and very little bits of information. And one of the main characteristics is that there would be one or two names in the centre who make the biggest noise of all. In 2025, the trend seems to lean towards Shedeur Sanders, the coach of Deion “Prime” Sanders.

Speculation continues to swirl around the Colorado Buffaloes’ legendary quarterback Shedeur Sanders and his potential landing spots. One team that was initially linked with Sanders, the New York Giants, now appears unlikely to pursue him with the third overall pick. Reports suggest concerns within the organization regarding fit, media attention, and leadership dynamics.

The Giants’ front office, led by head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, enters a critical season. After a disappointing 3-14 finish in 2024 and the midseason benching of Daniel Jones, the leadership duo faces mounting pressure. Committing to a rookie quarterback with questions about NFL readiness could be viewed as a risky gamble.

Instead, the Giants have taken a different route by signing veteran quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. Wilson and Winston have enough experience and a baseline level of competence, offering a safer short-term path than a high-risk rookie. The decision is a reflection of the current mindset. Instead of a long-term vision, the Giants are more focused on stabilising the current dilemmas and performance.

On FS1’s Breakfast Ball, panelist Craig Carton addressed these aspects while he put out his thoughts on why the Giants are expected to skip on Shedeur Sanders.

He’s not gonna be the New York Giants quarterback. The reason the Giants brought in both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston is because their coach and their GM are basically on a prove-it year. They are not going to put their jobs on the line for a rookie quarterback who does have question marks.

Craig Carton noted

With their high pick, the Giants may opt to select a versatile playmaker like Travis Hunter, as predicted in Pro Football Network’s latest mock draft. However, with Joe Flacco’s arrival in Ohio, the Cleveland Browns, who hold the second overall pick, are reportedly expected to lean towards drafting Travis Hunter.

The New York Giants are looking at other quarterback options as well

The recent cases of Jalen Hurts and Brock Purdy have given teams much more hope about the second and third days of the draft. The franchise quarterback who will lead a team to success might not be found in the first rounds, but even as late as the last pick of the entire draft.

The New York Giants, despite offering a late workout with Sanders, are still figuring out what they want and avoiding draft day embarrassment as well. They are also hosting a private workout with Jalen Milroe, Milroe, who arguably has one of the best floors amongst the quarterback class of this year; however, he has some drawbacks. In 2023, he led Alabama to an SEC championship and College Football Playoff berth, followed by a decent 9-4 campaign and ReliaQuest Bowl appearance in 2024.

As per Ian Rapoport, the Giants are also doing a similar workout with Tyler Shough as well. Furthermore, other considerations include Will Howard, who has gained some momentum with his recent bone-chilling take. Howard, the current CFP champion quarterback, could also come in as a developmental QB3 who can learn from two veterans and be ready to lead in a year or so.
