A unique piece of fielding in the 2025 Maharashtra Premier League captivated cricket fans all around the world. In a match between Puneri Bappa and Raigad Royals, wicket-keeper Suraj Shinde surprisingly hit the stumps on both the ends of the crease, in a bizarre run out.
Having started their 2025 MPL campaign on high with a opening win over Ratnagiri Jets by eight wickets, Puneri Bappa continued their winning run with their second straight victory, over Raigad Royals. Puneri posted a massive first innings total of 202 runs against the Royals, guided by Yash Nahar’s knock of 82 runs off 52 balls, Rushikesh Sonawane’s 58 and a quick-fire knock of 40 runs off 12 balls by Suraj Shinde.
In response, Raigad Royals chasing the 203-run target, were bowled out for a meager total of 103 runs, in just 13.1 overs. For Puneri Bappa pacer Nikit Dhumal claimed a brilliant five-wicket haul. However, the turning point of the match, which many believe, was a bizarre run-out in just the first over of Raigad’s innings, that sent opener Harsh Mogaveera back to the dugout for a duck, leaving his team reeling at 9/1.
On the fifth ball of the first over bowled by Puneri Bappa’s Ramkrishna Ghosh, Siddhesh Veer tried to guide an outswinger towards fine-leg. However, he missed in his attempt, with the ball instead hitting his bat to go towards the wicket-keeper. Veer tried to sneak a cheeky single, but his attempt was thwarted by keeper Suraj Shinde who quickly collected the ball and produced a moment of magic.

Veer had initially called Mogaveera for the run, but later signaled his partner to return. Shinde, meanwhile, brilliantly threw the ball towards the striker’s end, to inflict a run-out. Siddhesh Veer was fortunate enough to make his way back into the crease in time, before the ball hit the stumps. Interestingly, the ball then deflected to hit the stumps on the non-striker’s end in an outlandish manner, leaving everyone surprised.
Harsh Mogaveera was way outside his crease at the non-striker’s end and lost his wicket, as he had no had no time to react. It is not the first instance of the ball hitting the stumps on both the ends of the crease. Back in 2022, in the Bangladesh Premier League, West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell lost his wicket in a similar manner, after Tanzid Hasan’s throw hit the stumps on both the ends of the crease.

Despite his brilliant run-out against Raigad Royals and batting contribution, Suraj Shinde did not secure the Man of the Match award. The award was instead given to Puneri Bappa opener Yash Nahar, who scored an impressive 82 runs.
Next gen IPL stars? Three MPL players under scouts’ radar
The state T20 leagues have become a breeding ground for young talents, hoping their way to make into the IPL. The Maharashtra Premier League has been one of those league, with Atharva Kale, Siddhesh Veer and Roshan Waghsare being the three players to look out for this season.

Kale was one of the breakout stars of the 2024 MPL season, during which he scored 337 runs at a strike rate of 174. Veer on the other hand, on the back of his brilliant MPL form, made his debut for Maharashtra and even finished among the highest run-getters in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Waghsare is a unique left-arm wrist spinner, who picked eight wickets in the MPL last season, at an economy of just 6.6.

Apart from these three names, there are a few other IPL regulars who are participating in the MPL. Mukesh Choudhary, Rahul Tripathi, Vicky Ostwal, Arshin Kulkarni, Prashant Solanki, Ramakrishna Ghosh, and CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, are part of the league.
