One of the most consistent teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) off late, Delhi Capitals (DC) have named their four retentions ahead of the forthcoming season with quite a few surprises. Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje are set to once again play for the Capitals in IPL 2022.
While Pant will continue to lead the Capitals, they sprung quite a few surprises letting go of their top run-getter for the last two seasons Shikhar Dhawan and the extremely talented Kagiso Rabada. As has been the case with Delhi Capitals for quite some time now, they have heavily banked the on young guns and their retention list speaks so.
Both Shaw and Nortje have quite some heavy lifting to do next season if they are to justify their retention. And the same goes for Axar who has been very economical with the ball but his wicket column and batting is yet to contribute to the side. With a new core team, the Capitals have quite some buying to do at the mega auction coming up with a 47.5 crores purse.
Let’s look at three players DC might target at the IPL 2022 mega auction:
Devdutt Padikkal
Having released veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan, Delhi Capitals will be on the lookout for a solid opener and who is better than Devdutt Padikkal to fill the big shoes of Dhawan. In the 29 matches he has played in the last two seasons, Padikkal has amassed 884 runs at an average of over 30 and is the player who can give his side solid starts.
The Karnataka openers ability to adapt to situations and change gears at will makes him a perfect partner for Prithvi Shaw who is a clean hitter of the ball. The duo could provide stability to the side with their contrasting styles giving DC a great opening pair yet again this season.
Shahrukh Khan
Over time, Rishabh Pant has drifted from his role as a finisher to becoming a dependable middle-order batsman as he develops his game. This leaves Delhi with the need for a finisher, one that was filled by Shimron Hetmeyer and this time around DC might turn to budding star Shahrukh Khan for his hitting prowess.
While Shahrukh hasn’t had many opportunities to showcase his ability in the IPL, he is a proven finisher in the domestic circuit. It was not long ago that he helped Tamil Nadu to a second successive Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with a scintillating knock in the final. And he is just the guy who can provide the necessary firepower down the order.
Harshal Patel
The revelation of IPL 2021, Harshal Patel will undoubtedly be a hot commodity in the upcoming mega auction. And DC could be one of the franchises who could dive deep to get him on their side. Off late, the Capitals have had great balance but their death bowling have been a major issue and Harshal could be key to solving it.
Patel equalled the all-time record of DJ Bravo for most wickets in a season during IPL 2021 and most of it came in the death overs. His slower balls have been lethal and he has been consistent with his wicket-taking even with the Indian team. Patel will be the player to watch out for next season and Delhi will be looking to rope him in at any cost.
