4 players CSK can retain ahead of IPL 2022

4 players CSK can retain ahead of IPL 2022

MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) can be considered as one of the most successful franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Super Kings lifted the cup in 2010, 2011, and 2018. The three-time champion is likely to face a big dilemma as the IPL is all set for expansion.

As the BCCI is planning to make the T20 extravaganza a ten-team event, a mega auction is expected before IPL 2021. It is speculated that the Indian board will be providing the teams with an option of retaining only four players. All the current eight franchises can keep only two Indian and two overseas players from their current squad by retention and RTM.

In this article, we take a look at four players whom Chennai Super Kings might retain ahead of the IPL 2022 auction.

There’s no doubt that former Indian skipper MS Dhoni is going to be the first choice for the three-time champion. While Dhoni’s batting might have faced a decline in the recent past, he is still regarded as the best batsman in the business. It is highly unlikely for CSK to let go of their skipper who steered them to victory in three seasons.

Suresh Raina

Mr. IPL Suresh Raina is likely to be the second-choice Indian player for the Super Kings. The 34-year-old enjoys unprecedented success in the T20 Extravaganza and is an absolute beast with the bat. Raina forms an integral part of the CSK setup and will be the prime contender for leading the team when Dhoni decides to hand his boots in the Indian league.

Sam Curran

England’s young all-rounder Sam Curran was the only positive for the Chennai camp during the 2020 edition in an otherwise disappointing season. Curran impressed the entire cricket fraternity by causing carnage on the field both with the bat and ball. The 23-year-old has featured in 30 IPL matches scoring 333 runs at a strike rate of 150 and picking 32 wickets. The Super Kings management can look towards building CSK’s squad around Curran in the upcoming years.

Faf du Plessis

Former South African skipper Faf du Plessis is another interesting player whom CSK can retain for the 2022 edition. Faf has been absolutely brilliant with the willow and has played a lot of mind-boggling knocks to bail the Yellow Army out from the crunch situations. Du Plessis’ international career might be over after he was left out from South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad but the opening batsman has a lot of cricket left in him and is an asset to the Chennai camp.
