‘Wonderful wonderful achievement’: Twitter hails Ajaz Patel as the Mumbai born spinner etched his name in the history books

Ajaz Patel

Born in Mumbai, Ajaz Patel never would have expected that he would one day return to the city he was born in and create history with the New Zealand cricket team. In what seemed to be a fairytale return for him, the left-arm spinner bagged 10 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium to enter an elite list that holds only three names.

On a Wankhede pitch that offered turn and bounce from the very first session, Ajaz Patel put up a spin masterclass to achieve a mesmerising ten-wicket haul in the first innings. Ajajz spun a web around the Indian line up who couldn’t help but fall into a trap that saw the Kiwi spinner display great finesse.

From arm balls to subtle variations in pace, Ajajz Patel put on display his deadly arsenal as he bowled out the Indian team single-handedly. The monumental effort saw him bowl 47.5 overs over five sessions as he finished with figures of 119-10.

Cricket fraternity comes together to commend Ajaz Patel on the monumental occasion

With the wicket of Mohammed Siraj, Ajaz Patel joined the likes of Jim Laker and Anil Kumble. Ajaz is also the only left-arm spinner on the list. On the occasion, Kumble came forward to welcome Ajajz to the elite club while others came up with warm wishes for the left-arm spinner.

It is worth noting that Ajaz Patel is the only bowler to have achieved the feat in an away Test. The fact that he managed to do so on the first two days of a Test match is commendable. Moreover, one cannot help but admire that while Ajaz has been highly successful on his maiden India tour, his partner in crime, Will Somerville is yet to open his account.
