Punjab Kings left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh in an interview with India TV opened up about his experience in the IPL 2021 and the Punjab Kings’ camp.

In IPL 2021, Arshdeep Singh played a crucial role for Punjab Kings with the ball, especially in the death overs. In 6 matches, he scalped 7 wickets at an economy of 8.18 which is pretty decent for a bowler bowling majority of his overs in the death.

Arshdeep guided Punjab Kings towards victory in their first match of the season after bowling a tight over against the Rajasthan Royals’ skipper Sanju Samson who had scored a century. With Samson on strike, the Royals needed five from the final ball to win the match. However, Arshdeep bowled a wide yorker and Samson sliced it to deep extra-cover directly into the hands of Deepak Hooda and securing a four-run victory for PBKS.

“The situation of the match during the last four overs was 60-40 in the favor of Rajasthan Royals. With one over remaining of each pacer, the plan was to focus on the individual six deliveries. Shami Bhai got the wicket of Riyan Parag followed by a brilliant 19th over by Riley Meredith helped to take the pressure off me for the final over. Rahul Bhai and I discussed bowling wide yorkers and try to execute that by backing my abilities. I even got hit for a six but eventually, on the last ball I got the wicket and we won the match,” Arshdeep Singh told India TV.

Arshdeep Singh on the importance of getting to bowl to good players at the nets

Arshdeep disclosed that bowling in the nets to star Punjab Kings players like KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran and Sarfaraz Khan helped him train for game scenarios.

“We have KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, and Sarfaraz Khan in the nets. Bowling against them in practice sessions helps in analyzing your flaws. When you bowl to such great players, you get an idea about the areas where you’re leaking most runs. When you’re bowling at such a level, you can’t take pressure to get the better of you. Always back your execution and you will get good results,” added Arshdeep Singh.

Arshdeep also spoke about what he learned in the Punjab camp from Mohammed Shami and discussed his bowling abilities. He considered himself fortunate to have Mohammed Shami as his guide.

“I discuss minute things including seam position with Shami Bhai. We also talk about how to respond when you’re getting hit by a batsman. Since we all were in a bio-bubble, it becomes a lively atmosphere, just like a family. I consider myself as an attacking bowler. But for this year, I had a chat with skipper KL Rahul and Shami. I also focussed on bowling more dot balls and hence, my economy has also improved along with my wicket tally,” said Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep does not have a “dream wicket” in his mind, but every scalp that makes his team win the game is his preference. He loves when he gets a wicket after executing a specific plan.

“I haven’t planned on taking any dream wicket. Any wicket that I take in crucial moments is my dream wicket. While playing age-group cricket, the plan was to become the leading wicket-taker. It feels good when you plan a wicket. Last year, I had planned on bowling wide yorkers to Andre Russell at death and it worked,” added Arshdeep Singh.
