IPL 2022: BCCI will allow stadiums to have more than 25% crowds – Reports
Wankhede Stadium
The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) will allow the crowd capacity of the stadium to exceed 25% in the 15th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, which will kick-start from March 26. Chennai Super Kings will lock horns with Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.
Due to the recent pandemic of COVID-19, all matches of IPL will be staged in Maharashtra. Only four venues across Mumbai and Pune will host 55 league matches. The Maharashtrian government only consented to 25% crowed capacity. So as per the capacity, only 9800-10000 will be allowed inside the Wankhede stadium. Brabourne Stadium can have 7-8000 people, Dy Patil will host 11000 fans, and Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium (MCA) will host 12000 spectators.
One of BCCI’s members told Cricbuzz: “That is our understanding. Going forward the stadiums will have more fans than initial games. With Covid cases coming down by the day, we are hoping more people will be in the stands.”

BCCI had allowed the crowds during the bilateral series between India and Sri Lanka
Initially, BCCI had forbidden the crowds in the stadium during recent India’s home bilateral series against Sri Lanka. But because the match was also Virat Kohli’s 100th Test match, BCCI allowed the fans to watch cricket from the stadium at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium in Mohali. Also, India’s bilateral series against West Indies were played in front of the crowd.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah had written a letter to the state associations about how crowd had helped team India perform with full passion. He said: “Team India have just wrapped an amazing home run with clean sweep, first over West Indies team and now against Sri Lankan team. The pink-ball Test in Bengaluru witnesses a full house and the team led by Mr. Rohit Sharma outperformed the opponents in all three departments.”
