BCCI questioned on Conflict of Interest after MS Dhoni appointed Mentor in T20 World Cup

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India’s squad for the upcoming 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup. While the selection of a handful of players shocked the cricket fraternity, the most surprising was the inclusion of former Indian skipper MS Dhoni. Dhoni has been appointed as the mentor of Virat Kohli-led side for the marquee event.

Though BCCI has been subjected to a lot of love for including Dhoni as the mentor, the Indian board finds itself in legal trouble due to the same. It is learned that BCCI has received a conflict of interest complaint about the appointment of the former Indian skipper.

The complaint has been filed by the former Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association life member Sanjeev Gupta. Gupta questioned the appointment of the Ranchi-born as he is already the captain of the franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Sanjeev also cited the example of Rahul Dravid.

In 2018, Dravid was sent a conflict of interest notice from the BCCI Ethics Officer. The former Indian skipper was appointed as the head of the National Cricket Academy while he was also the coach of the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals. As a consequence of the same, Dravid was forced to step down as RR coach.

Senior journalist Boria Majumdar gave the information regarding Sanjeev Gupta filing a complaint via his official Twitter handle. Boria also revealed that the Indian board is yet to respond to the allegations by Gupta.

“MS Dhoni appointment questioned on grounds of conflict of interest. Sanjeev Gupta writes to the apex council. Why was Dravid not allowed earlier? Why was he forced to leave RR? How can CSK captain be an Indian team mentor? BCCI yet to respond. Let’s see what transpires” Boria Majumdar tweeted.
