IPL Media Rights

The fight for the IPL Media Rights for 2023-27 is now in open. According to available information 5 serious players have already bought the tender documents. Disney Star, TV18-Viacom (Sports-18), Amazon, Zee & Sony have already bought the tender documents within the first week of BCCI releasing it. YouTube, Netflix & Facebook are also set to bid for IPL Media rights, says report.

The list does not stop there, as many other companies, the names of which have not yet been revealed, have also contributed. The e-auction will take place on June 12, and the BCCI is expected to raise a massive sum of US$7.2 billion during the auction. Meanwhile, the deadline to get the ITT is May 10.

Apart from Indian firms, Apple, the American tech behemoth, is also expected to get its hands on the ITT, according to The Times of India. “Transparency will be key,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah told TOI. “Revenues from sales or rights will be directed to India’s domestic structure, better infrastructure, and the welfare of the cricketing fraternity.”

The tender for IPL Media Rights has been divided into four packages because the television and digital rights will be separated to allow different parties to broadcast a smaller number of games at the same time. Aside from that, people in other parts of the world would receive a separate package. The obvious implication of that package is that a combined bid may be impossible.

The IPL media rights will be divided into four packages.

The following are the package’s of IPL Media rights:

A) Television rights for the subcontinent of India

B) Digital rights

C) A group of 18 matches (The inaugural game, the playoffs games, weekend double-headers, and evening games)

D. The Rest of the World

The starting or base price of the four-category package has been set at 32,890 crores. The BCCI has kept the base price of television rights per match at Rs 49 crore. If the number of matches is increased, the additional fee will be charged on a pro-rata basis. It will be followed by 33 crores for digital rights, 16 crores for the 18-match bundle, and 3 crores for the remainder of the package.

“The packages have been divided in such a way that maximum participation is ensured.” This will keep competition fierce and transparent, allowing the BCCI to maximise its revenue potential to the fullest,” BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal said.

The auction will last two days, with the first two categories being sold on the first day and the remaining two categories being sold on the second. It has also been noted that only an Indian buyer with a net worth of 1000 crore or more as of March 31, 2021 may bid on Category A of the package.
