BIG BLOW! Chennai Super Kings frontline pacer set to miss the majority of IPL 2022
Deepak Chahar in IPL 2021
Chennai Super Kings pacer Deepak Chahar, the premier pacer for the defending champions of the IPL, will miss at least a major portion of the 2022 season. According to ESPNcricinfo, Chahar will likely need several weeks to heal from the quadriceps tear he suffered in the third T20I against West Indies last month; therefore, he will not be available for the IPL, which will be played between March 26 and May 29.
In Bengaluru, Chahar is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy, where the Super Kings are awaiting a final assessment from the facility. He was bought by the Chennai Super Kings for INR 14 crores (US$1.866 million) in the 2022 player auction, making him the second-most expensive buy. Due to his success as a bowling allrounder, Chahar was one of the most intensely contested bids at the auction. With three match-changing knocks in his last three ODIs, Chahar has shown his batting ability: 69* (against Sri Lanka), 54 (against South Africa) and 38 (vs. West Indies).
Rajasthan Royals and Super Kings were the late entrants in the bidding race for the bowler, as Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad bid at the auction for the bowler. The Super Kings had not retained Chahar before the auction but offered him INR 11 crore as part of their strategy to retain the core of the previous year’s team. At no other auction, Super Kings had ever spent more than INR 10 crore.

As an uncapped fast bowler, Chahar made his IPL debut with Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016 for INR 10 lakhs. The Chennai Super Kings acquired him for INR 80 lakhs in the 2018 mega auction. In 58 games, Chahar had 58 wickets, 42 of which were collected during the powerplay (first six overs), 15 more than New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult, who had 27 during the four-year period.
Chennai Super Kings camp to begin on 8th March in Surat
Super Kings will conduct their preparatory camp in Surat, a city on the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra, where they plan to get used to the conditions in Mumbai and Pune, where the league phase will be played. Kasi Viswanathan, CEO of the Super Kings, said the camp would begin on March 8, in addition to the initial five-day quarantine period. “We plan to practice on pitches that will be like those in Mumbai and Pune since the Chennai pitch is clay-based,” Viswanathan said. According to Viswanathan, the overseas coaching staff, led by Stephen Fleming, will arrive around March 12. Captain MS Dhoni and support staff, including assistant coach Laxmipathy Balaji, already landed in Surat on Wednesday.

Viswanathan said teams are likely to leave for Mumbai by road on March 20, even if the IPL schedule has not been released yet. Since the Super Kings are the winner in 2021, they will play the opening game.
