David Warner hits Mohammed Hafeez for a six
The second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2021 saw Pakistan and Australia toe to toe. While the thriller came to an end with Matthew Wade‘s outrageous scoops, it was David Warner who stole the show. Warner played a quick-fire knock of 49 runs as he smashed 3 fours and as many sixes.
While the innings itself was a spectacle, his bizarre shot off Mohammed Hafeez was the highlight of the 30 ball innings. Warner smashed Hafeez for a humongous six on the first ball of the eighth over as it slipped from the bowler’s hand and bounced twice before reaching the batter. Warner dispatched it into the stands as it was called a no-ball.

While the shot had the fans in awe, some former players questioned if the shot was in line with the spirit of the game. Namely, former Indian cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Harbhajan Singh among others raised questions over the message it sent. While many felt it was a mistake from Hafeez, David Warner feels it was a ploy from the veteran to get under his skin.
“It wasn’t by mistake,” Warner can be seen answering the man, shaking his head. “He was trying to see what I was gonna do. So, he was gonna bowl and stop, to see whether I was coming down the wicket, to see what I was gonna do,” he added. “That’s what happened.“
David Warner amassed 289 runs in seven innings at an average of over 48 as he was adjudged the Player of the Tournament. With Aaron Finch misfiring, Warner shouldered the entire responsibility atop the order as he helped Australia to their maiden T20 World Cup trophy. Warner played a couple of scintillating innings in the semifinals and finals to send a message ahead of the mega auction.
