ENG vs IND: “Shot selection is the most important thing” – Virender Sehwag on KL Rahul’s comeback in Test cricket

India’s KL Rahul made a brilliant comeback in Test cricket during the first match against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. After constantly remaining out from the red-ball squad, Rahul finally got an opportunity at the top-order. The 27-year-old made the most out of it as he played a vital knock of 84 runs against a quality English bowling attack.

India’s regular choice openers, Shubman Gill and Mayank Agarwal weren’t available for selection owing to their respective injuries. Hence, Rahul, who was earlier picked as a middle-order batsman, was asked to open alongside Rohit Sharma

Several cricket experts and fans hailed Rahul’s batting performance which came at a pitch where most of the players across sides had struggled. Meanwhile, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag also leapt praises for the Karnataka batsman.

He reckoned that there are two ways in which a player can make a comeback where one of them is the Rahul Dravid style of batting which means offering no shots at all. While the other one is the Sehwag style of batting, which is taking an aggressive role.

“There are two types of mindset, you can make a comeback either in Rahul Dravid style, where you don’t play a shot at all and become extremely defensive, or you play aggressively in Sehwag style. Both are difficult, so you have to find your own way which is best for you,” Sehwag said during the discussion on Sony Sports

The former cricketer pointed out that Rahul’s enhancement in the shot selection is a major reason behind his improved batting performance. Sehwag signed off while citing the example of Virat Kohli who is very particular about his shots across formats.

“He said a very good thing that the improvement was caused by his shot selection. It is the most important thing, if your shot selection is good, the performance will surely happen. Virat Kohli is so consistent because his shot selection is very good. He knows which shots he can play and which he can’t. He sticks to that even after scoring a century,” Sehwag added.
