The cash-rich Indian Premier League has changed the lives of many cricketers. But we often forget that in every successful event, lots of hard work is done behind the scene. The cricketers play under the artificial lights and we ignore the fact that to prepare a pitch, the ground staffs work under the harsh sunlight. These ground staffs have to fend for themselves while the players enjoy the five-star treatment.

But this year, a private firm, Cadbury, has come forward to sponsor the entire ground staff of MCA as well as the Wankhede Stadium. They are given a uniform designed by celebrity designer Masaba. Also, a special bus has been arranged for the groundsmen to get them from the hotel to the ground and vice versa.

“All the facilities which are provided to the players at the five-star hotel will be provided to the groundsmen as well,” an MCA source has quoted.

Groundsmen in cricket play an important role in preparing the pitch. And one of them is Vasant Mohite (57) who works at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

“There was talk that our accommodation would be arranged in a five-star hotel before the start of the IPL. One day later, the Mumbai Cricket Association informed us that Cadbury had arranged our accommodation in a five-star hotel. It has been said that he will take care of our clothes and meals for the next two months till the end of IPL season. Today I am staying in a five-star hotel,” said Vasant Mohite.

“Matches used to end late at night. So, I could not go home at night. At that time, we had to spend the night in a small room under the lamp stand. There were frequent night sleep disturbances due to mosquitoes.”

“On days when there are no matches, we arrive at the stadium at nine in the morning and leave at six in the evening. We arrive early on match day. If we worked till late at night, MCA would pay double.”

“Now the experience of going to the dressing room is also different. We have our own bus. Which leaves us at the stadium. I have no words. I can only say thank you,” said Vasant Mohite.
