Harbhajan Singh hails Khalistani terrorist Bhindranwale as ‘Martyr’ on 37th anniversary of Operation Blue star

Harbhajan Singh, former Indian cricketer has offered his pranams for the Khalistani terrorist Bhindranwale on his death anniversary and hailed him as a martyr in his Instagram story. This created controversial reactions among the social media users as the former cricketer glorified the terrorists on the 37th anniversary of Operation Blue star. The 40 year old cricketer hailing from Jalandar, paid tribute to Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and others killed inside the Golden Temple during Operation Bluestar.

The post begins with the caption ‘Salute to the martyrs’. The text in the image written in Punjabi reads, “Heartfelt tribute to those martyred in Operation inside Shri Harmandir Sahib on June 1- June 6, 1984”. Till now there has been no mode of apology being provided by Harbhajan Singh for his controversial actions and he is expected to open up on this issue soon.

Today there was an event inside Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar in remeberence of “Khalistan day” with flags and posters. The poster says “Live with pride, die for the religion.” which featured Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale at the center wearing a blue turban. A march was carried by the pro Khalistan group Dal Khalsa in the event of Khalistan Day on 6th June.

The operation blue star was the biggest internal security mission by Indian army which took place in the premises of Golden temple between June 1 and June 8, 1984. This mission was ordered by then prime minister Indira Gandhi to control the public order situation in Punjab. The Khalistan supporters took over the Akal Takht complex in Amritsar’s Golden Temple.

The casualties as per the official reports were 83 Indian Army Jawans and 492 civilians throughout the whole Operation. Few months later, on 31st October, 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards to avenge for the Operation Blue Star. This led to large-scale anti-Sikh riots in India where Congress leaders were accused of leading mobs against Sikhs.
