IND vs SL: “Rahul Dravid knew he can bat” – Bhuvneshwar Kumar on why Deepak Chahar came in to bat ahead of him in 2nd ODI
Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar
India’s vice-captain for the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has revealed that the team management took the decision of sending Deepak Chahar ahead of him in the second ODI match.
India’s decision turned out to do wonders as Chahar scored his maiden international fifty during the game on Tuesday. Moreover, he rescued the national side when they were struggling with a score of 193/7 at one stage. But his partnerships with Suryakumar Yadav and Bhuvi took India home in a nail-biting encounter.
Kumar stated that Rahul Dravid has worked a lot with Chahar during the India ‘A’ tours and he knew about the Agra-born’s batting skills.
“Look, he’s played with our coach Rahul Dravid before for India ‘A’ and some other series and he scored there as well. So, he (Dravid) knew he (Chahar) could bat and he can hit a few balls. So that was his call and the way he batted proved him right. We all know he can bat, he has done it many times. It wasn’t a tough call but it’s just good to see the way he scored runs,” Kumar said during the post-match press conference.
“If Chahar continues working on his batting, India will get another all-rounder”
Bhuvneshwar Kumar further went on to say that Chahar has the ability to become a proper all-rounder for team India if he continues working on his batting skills. Earlier, he had also taken two crucial wickets of the Sri Lankan batsmen and hence, won the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his all-round performance.
“Yes, surely he has a lot of capability as he showed today. I am sure he has the ability and if he continues working on it then, of course, India will get another all-rounder.
“It is perhaps a bit early to say all-rounder but with the ability he has, the way he practices for it, always by keeping possible match situations in mind. I am sure if he continues to do it, India has got another brilliant bowler who can bat in the lower order,” added Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
