The Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) named the Indian team for the upcoming T20 World Cup on Tuesday. There have been quite a few surprises in the side as India’s chief selector Chetan Sharma named the side for a World Cup.
The major change was the absence of Shikhar Dhawan and India’s ace leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. The experienced duo didn’t fair too well in Sri Lanka which could be the reason behind their axing. There were quite a few surprises in the pace department as T Natarajan and Deepak Chahar missed out on a place in the squad with the latter being maned as a reserve. Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami were named as the only three speedsters.
Ravichandran Ashwin returns for T20 World Cup 2021
In the spin department, the return of Ravichandran Ashwin is the biggest surprise of the squad. Along with him, Axar Patel too has found a place in the final 15 as Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav missed out. The move does add variety to the attack but the absence of a leg spinner could hurt the men in blue.
The 2021 T20 World Cup will be Kohli’s first ICC event of the shortest format as captain. All eyes will be on the Indian skipper as his quest for his maiden ICC trophy as the skipper of the senior team continues. While Kohli the batsman has been in tremendous form in white-ball cricket, Kohli the captain will have to step up to rally his troops on their way to the summit.
