How many times have MI vs CSK played in the final?

CSK VS MI

The two heavyweights in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have faced each other for a record number of final matches (four) in the tournament. The teams with former leaders Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni’s men have been up against each other during the ultimate matches of 2010, 2013, 2015, and 2019 seasons.

In total, both sides have locked horns 37 times thus far in the cash-rich league, resulting in 20 victories for MI and 17 wins for the Chennai-based franchise. These two teams are also the most successful sides with five titles each.

The rivalry began at the 2010 IPL final, where CSK lifted their maiden title after beating Mumbai by 22 runs. Following this, MI won all three final matches. The Mukesh Ambani-owned side defeated Chennai in 2013 (by 23 runs), in 2015 (by 43 runs), and lastly in 2019 (by 1 run).

Interestingly, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma faced each other during the 2017 final match between the MI Paltan and now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants. However, Australian batsman Steven Smith was the skipper of the Pune-based side which suffered a 1-run loss in the season finale.

How Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings fare in IPL 2023?

MI skipper Rohit Sharma and CSK captain MS Dhoni

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings had an underwhelming season in 2021 where both teams were at the bottom end of the points table. However, both MI and CSK have made some major changes in their roster.

The two teams have added Cameron Green and Ben Stokes to their squad respectively, strengthening the playing XI to a significant effect. The return of Jofra Archer can also be a major boost for Mumbai Indians who struggled with their bowling last season.

IPL 2023 was also the last time when Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni faced each in IPL as captains. Both teams are well-equipped to reach many more finals.
