IPL 2021: Virat Kohli discloses the thought process behind the decision to quit the RCB captaincy

Kohli is no more the captain but still a key player in IPL 2022

Virat Kohli shocked all with his sudden announcement of stepping down as the skipper of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 onwards. However, he assured to continue playing as a player for the Bangalore-based franchise till his last season in the cash-rich league.

In a recent development, the 33-year-old listed down the two reasons behind taking such a mammoth decision mid-way during the tournament. In a mini conversation on the Inside RCB show, Kohli said:

“There were two things. The main factor was workload, and then I did not want to be dishonest towards my responsibilities. If I am unable to give 120 per cent towards my responsibilities, then I would rather leave it. I have never been the kind of person who will just hold on to things for the sake of it. I am the kind of person who is not attached to anything.”

“I have not enjoyed a lot of Virat’s captaincy until this year” – Gautam Gambhir

Former India and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Gautam Gambhir has showered praises for Virat Kohli’s captaincy for RCB in IPL 2021. On the ESPNCricinfo show ‘Runorder,’ the southpaw reviewed Kohli’s captaincy in the ongoing edition of the cash-rich league. He stated:

“Virat has been fabulous. Honestly, I have not enjoyed a lot of his captaincy, but this time around, he’s been very, very good. Probably the reason is that he thinks this is his last time as captain in IPL, (so) he wants to enjoy it more; he’s just more relaxed. And he’s got the bowlers this time…”

The Challengers have played like a really strong side in both the legs of the Indian T20 League. Moreover, unlike most seasons, they haven’t been heavily dependent on Virat and ABD only as other players have also contributed in all three aspects of the game.
