“Bio-bubble fatigue is REAL” – Big setback for Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2022
Despite staying in the bubble of the tournament for an extended period, England Star Opening Batsman Jason Roy has pulled out of the IPL 2022. Jason Roy, who was signed by Gujarat Titans for his base price of INR 2 crore at the mega auction of TATA IPL 2022, informed the franchise of his decision last week. Gujarat Titans are yet to find a replacement, according to reports.
Jason Roy had a strong performance in the PSL 2022, which was also played within a biosecure bubble, where he not only finished among the top batters in the tournament but also contributed towards the Gladiators’ fifth-place finish in the six-team league. A strike rate of 170.22 helped Roy score two fifties and a hundred runs on his way to 303 runs at an average of 50.50.
Roy has decided not to participate in the IPL for the second time since finding a team in the auction. Roy signed with Delhi Capitals for INR 1.5 crore in 2020 but opted out for personal reasons. Roy had previously played for the Gujarat Lions (2017), the Delhi Daredevils (2018) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (2021) in the IPL. The 2021 auction did not produce a sale for him, but he was drafted in to replace Mitchell Marsh. At 29.90, Roy has scored 329 runs in 13 IPL matches, an average of 29.90, an average strike rate of 129.01, including two half-centuries on debuts for the Daredevils and the Sunrisers.
This isn’t the first time this has happened during the Covid-19 pandemic, which has severely restricted movement in the last two years. In the past, several players have withdrawn from the IPL, both before and during seasons, citing the need to stay fit, particularly mentally, for marquee bilateral series and World Cup events. There will be the T20 World Cup in Australia, which will take place in October-November 2022.
