England’s pacer Mark Wood won’t take part in the upcoming season of IPL for the Lucknow Super Giants due to an injury in his right elbow while playing the first Test against West Indies in North Sound.

The 32-year-old was picked up by the KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants for Rs. 7.5 crores at the mega-auction in Bengaluru. During the match against West Indies, he exited the field on the third day, after delivering just five overs on the third morning. He tried to take a fitness test and bowled six deliveries in the nets before the game on the fifth day. His representation in the IPL has become doubtful from then.

Wood’s loss is a huge blow to the Super Giants as they have limited overseas options. Marcus Stoinis and Jason Holder, who are also brought by the franchise will miss the start of their campaign. Holder will be there along with the West Indies team with their match against England and Stoinis will be with the Aussie team against Pakistan.

Wood played for the first time in 2018 alongside Chennai Super Kings and went wicketless. 2022 would have been Wood’s second season if he played the game. The England and Wales Cricket Board is yet to make a statement on Wood.

Quinton de Kock, Kyle Mayers and Evin Lewis are the other overseas options. But Myers is also a part of the series between West Indies and England. Mark Wood is the 3rd English player to miss out on the upcoming season, Alex Hales and Jason Roy pulled themselves out due to bio-bubble fatigue.

“He’s frustrated, he couldn’t straighten his elbow”: Steve Harmison on Mark Wood

Mark Wood

Former England cricketer Steve Harmison blamed the ECB for the mismanagement and overuse of Mark Wood during the Ashes. Wood has been prone to injury and several fans and experts were surprised to see him bowl long spells against Australia in the Ashes.

“He’s frustrated, he couldn’t straighten his elbow, there’s a bit of swelling. He bowled a lot (in the Ashes) and I remember thinking that we’re going to need him further down the line.”

“But Mark will never every shy away from that. The thing with him is that he always wants to take wickets, he’s a bit like Ben Stokes. And that’s where you need strong leadership to just take the ball off them and make sure they don’t go anywhere near the bowling.” Harmison added.
