The first Test between India and South Africa saw the visitors spring a surprise as they handed young gun, Marco Jansen, his Test debut. The Boxing Day Test kicks off the three-match Test series and Jansen has some heavy lifting to do on debut. The youngster has been brought into the side to add some variety and in Anrich Nortje’s absence, the onus will be on him to get the breakthroughs.

While Marco Jansen is not the fastest of the lot, his height and the left armer’s natural angle will be crucial for the Proteas. Jansen got off to a shaky start as the nerves on debut got to the budding quick. The 21-year-old gave away 12 run in his first over before he found his groove.

Having found his rhythm, Marco Jansen troubled the Indian openers with the moving ball. He tested the openers with a couple of inswingers and tried to cramp them with his extra bounce. All was going well for the youngster and he even managed the first mistake of the game from the Indian batsmen but it went begging as Quinton de Kock dropped a pretty straightforward catch.

During the 18th over of the game, Janse got a genuine edge from Mayank Agarwal. Agarwal who was solid up until then tried to defend a ball on the sixth stump and was undone by the extra bounce and seam movement. De Kock dived to left and managed to get to the ball on full stretch only to grass it.

Netizens were furious as the Protea keeper robbed Marco Jansen of a great opportunity to kick off his wicket count. Jansen too was frustrated as all his effort to set up Mayank went in vain.

Barring the lone incident, Indian opener KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal were impressive in the opening session. The duo brought up the half-century partnership and helped the team to the score of 83 at lunch. The duo is looking set for a long haul and the hosts will have to step up if they are to break the partnership.
