England’s veteran leg-spinner Monty Panesar often garners headlines for his absurd comments and thoughts. The 39-year-old again came into the limelight as he expressed his bizarre wish of the football club Real Madrid owning a franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

It is no secret that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking forward to expanding one of the richest sports leagues in the world, IPL. The Indian board wishes to make the Indian league a ten-team tournament from eight franchises. In the same light, BCCI has invited bids for one of the two new IPL teams debuting in the 2022 season.

“The governing council of the IPL invites bids to acquire the right to own and operate one of the two new teams proposed to be introduced to take part in the Indian Premier League from the IPL 2022 season, through a tender process,” the IPL said in an official statement.

The interested candidates are expected to ask for tender details by October 5. However, there is no information regarding when the authorities will be sending in invites for owing the second IPL team. Meanwhile, it is also learned that BCCI has kept the base price for the new teams at INR 2000 crore. The cricketing body is expecting a windfall of INR 5000 crore to cover the losses incurred due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

As soon as the Board of Control for Cricket in India released the notification regarding the new IPL franchise, England’s veteran spinner Monty Panesar came up with a suggestion on his official Twitter handle. The veteran asked the Spanish football club Real Madrid to buy an IPL franchise.

“Why don’t @realmadrid buy one of the IPL teams ?” Monty wrote on his Twitter handle.
