MS Dhoni was seen with his Chennai Super Kings (CSK) teammates celebrating the 11th anniversary of the Indian team’s 2011 ICC World Cup victory. On this day, April 2, 11 years ago, Dhoni was the captain when India defeated Sri Lanka in a closely fought final at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
MS Dhoni’s team only lost one game during the tournament, to South Africa, and their match against England ended in a high-scoring tie. India defeated Australia in the tournament’s quarter-finals in Ahmedabad, eliminating the defending champions and preventing them from reaching the finals for the first time since the 1992 World Cup.
In the semi-finals, India faced arch-rivals Pakistan in Mohali, and Sachin Tendulkar won the Player of the Match award for his 85-run knock, while the Indian bowlers did a good job of defending the total, as India advanced to the finals for the first time since the 2003 World Cup.
In the finals, Sri Lanka batted first after winning the infamous double toss and set India a 275-run target, with Mahela Jayawardene scoring a memorable century while anchoring the innings.
After Lasith Malinga gave the Men in Blue a heart attack by dismissing Virender Sehwag for a duck and Sachin Tendulkar early, it was Gautam Gambhir who made 97 and Virat Kohli who contributed 30 odd runs.
Then, as history has it, MS Dhoni dethroned eventual Player of the Tournament Yuvraj Singh and batted 91*, adding more than 100 runs with Gambhir, who fell three runs short of a match-winning inning. MS Dhoni then hit Nuwan Kulasekara for a six to secure victory. a moment that has been etched in Indian cricket history with gold.
