Nathan Lyon celebrates 400th Test wicket

A year-long wait for Nathan Lyon finally came to an end at the Gabba as he picked his 400th Test wicket. Lyon bowled 33 wicketless overs in the Ashes opener before he finally managed to get one. The wicket of Dawid Malan, which he picked in the fourth over of day four, proved to be crucial as the English order collapsed thereafter as Lyon scalped four.

Following a disastrous batting performance in the first innings and a rather luckless second innings with the ball, England has bounced back strongly. Following yet another rocky start Joe Root and Dawid Malan have steadied the ship. The duo had reduced the lead to under 50 when Nathan Lyon struck triggering the landslide as England managed just 74 runs for the last eight wickets.

In the final Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year at the Gabba, Nathan Lyon came agonisingly close to achieving the milestone. But India’s young lower order made sure, the veteran off-spinner couldn’t afflict anymore damage. Almost a year after, Lyon achieved the milestone at the Gabba becoming only the third Aussie bowler to achieve the feat.

The much-awaited wicket came in the 73rd over of the England innings as Dawid Malan stepped out looking to defend but was beaten by the turn. The ball looped up as Malan edged it onto his pads and Marnus Labuschagne completed a straightforward catch at short leg to give Lyon his 400th Test wicket.

The wicket turned the table for the Englishmen as their batting order collapsed like a house of cards. While it seemed like the visitors might go on to put a fighting total on the board, a;ll they managed is a 20 run lead which the Aussies chased down at the expense of a single wicket.
