18-year-old French batter Gustav McKeon becomes youngest cricketer to score century in T20I
Gustav McKeon
French batter Gustav McKeon, who is 18-year and 280 days old, became the first teenager to score a T20I century in men’s cricket on Monday. He smashed five fours and nine sixes and scored 109 runs off 61 balls against Switzerland at Tikkurila Cricket Ground in Vantaa to achieve this feat. It was a T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier match of Group B.
It was also his second international match. On his debut match, he scored a 54-ball 76 runs against Czech Republic on Sunday. He is also the first cricketer from France to achieve this feat. McKeon broke the record of Afghanistan’s Hazratullah Zazai. The Afghanistan opener had scored an unbeaten 162 runs off 62 balls against Ireland in 2019. He was 20 years and 337 that time.
But the century by McKeon had gone in vain when his team ended up in the losing side. Switzerland defeated France by chasing their 158-run target by two wickets. Swiss skipper Faheem Nazir scored 67 runs off 46 balls while Ali Nayyer’s cameo in the end ensured their team’s victory. Nayyer smashed 12 runs off the final three deliveries. The last ball of a innings had reached the boundary line for four that broke French hearts.
