Three Mankading dismissal attempts in IPL which rocked social media
Below are three such Mankading attempts in IPL that created a lot of buzz when the incident happened.
The sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is underway and so is plenty of drama and action. Over the years, IPL has produced thrilling games that have been etched in the memory of the fans forever. Not just games but small moments also capture significant attention from the fans and there are different reasons behind it. While some moments become memorable for good reasons, some are remembered for the buzz they created.
Among many such moments are three Mankading attempts that created a lot of buzz. For those unversed, Mankading is a form of dismissal in cricket that involves the bowler and the batter at the non-striker’s end. While this mode of dismissal was never illegal, it was considered against the spirit of the game.
However, after the International Cricket Council (ICC) directed that this mode of dismissal will be counted as a runout, it has become a tad regular. There have been many instances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when a bowler has tried to run out the non-striker for gaining an unfair advantage. But only a few have made headlines. Below are three such Mankading attempts in IPL that created a lot of buzz when the incident happened.
Ravichandran Ashwin (Kings XI Punjab) vs Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals)
Ravichandran Ashwin is the most vocal cricketer when it comes to running out non-strikers. The Indian off-spinner has openly admitted that he feels no shame in doing that as it falls well within the laws of the game. The first time Ashwin tried running a batter out in IPL was way back in 2019. Playing for Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab), Ashwin ran out Jos Buttler for advancing too much.
This created a stir in the cricketing ecosystem as many slammed the Indian cricketer for ‘stooping so low’. However, Ashwin strongly backed his actions whenever he got an opportunity.
Ravichandran Ashwin (Rajasthan Royals) vs Shikhar Dhawan (Delhi Capitals)
Three years after his first attempt, Ashwin tried running out a batter once again. Although he did not do it, the Rajasthan Royals spinner did give a silent warning to Delhi Capitals’ Shikhar Dhawan. The batter, meanwhile, replied in a funny manner. Dhawan kneeled on the ground while laughing it out.
Harshal Patel (Royal Challengers Bangalore) vs Ravi Bishnoi (Lucknow Super Giants)
The latest of many Mankading attempts came during the 15th match of IPL 2023, between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). As LSG required one run off the last ball, Harshal Patel noticed Ravi Bishnoi advancing way too much and hence he tried to run the LSG batter out. However, Patel could not pull it off and became a talking point.
