Indians are known to be one of the most passionate fans of cricket. The fans treat the sport as a religion and the icons as Gods. Some take it to the next scale, as they dedicate their lives to only supporting the Indian team. The same craze follows into the IPL, but now the fans are divided and support any one of the 10 franchises playing.
Sadly, this sport has also caused the death of a fan in Kolhapur. It occurred on 27th March, during the match between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The victim is 63-year-old Bandopant Bapuso Tibile, who celebrated the wicket of Rohit Sharma while he was trying to chase record breaking target of 278.
The two MI fans watching with him, Balwant Mahadev Jhanjage (50) and Sagar Sadashiv Jhanjage (35), were not happy with the celebrations. In rage, they beat up Tibile with sticks. They rushed the 63-year-old to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on 31st March.
The police have arrested the assailants and have filed a case against them. They were puzzled when they found out the motive of the murder, as it was a very small issue to start a fight about.
The El Clasico of the Indian Premier League
Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are regarded as two of the biggest teams in the Indian Premier League. In the 17 seasons played so far, the two teams have won the IPL five times each. Since 2010, they have been regarded as the teams to beat as well.
The start of their rivalry began in 2010, when they met in the finals. The match was easy sailing for CSK, as they won by 22 runs. They defended their title the very next season and once again reached the finals in 2012 and 2013. They lost to KKR in 2012, but faced MI in 2013.
This time things had changed, as they faced a Mumbai that were better than before. Despite chasing a low score of 149, MI restricted CSK to win their maiden IPL title. They once again met in the finals of the 2015 IPL, which saw a much more dominating performance by MI.
MI scored a mammoth 202, which was the 2nd highest score in the IPL finals then. They beat CSK by 41 runs to clinch their 2nd title. CSK were then banned by the BCCI for two years from, making them miss the 2016 and 2017 IPL. During that period, MI won their 3rd title.
In 2018, CSK returned and they won the title, while MI missed out on the playoffs by two points. They did face off again in the 2019 final, which saw the match go till the last ball. Lasith Malinga managed to defend 9 runs to win MI the title, picking up the wicket of Shardul Thakur when they needed 2 off 1.
Ever since that season, the two sides have not met each other in the IPL playoffs. MI did defend the title the next season, but failed to qualify for the playoffs in the following two seasons and got knocked out of the eliminator in 2023. Meanwhile CSK won two titles to match MI’s record, with their recent title coming in 2023. Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni are the most successful captains in the history of the IPL, winning the tournament five times as captain.
