South Africa and Zimbabwe faced each other in their opening game on Monday [October 25] at the Blundstone Arena in Hobart. During that match, the rain had reduced the overs to nine.

The incident happened in the final over of Zimbabwe’s innings. Anrich Nortje was the bowler who delivered a full-length ball on the fourth stump. Milton Shumba, the batter scooped the ball and it went to the fine leg.

Quinton de Kock, Proteas’ wicketkeeper, removed his gloves to collect the ball. However, when a fielder threw the ball, it hit a piece of the gloves that were lying there. The on-field umpire then gave five penalty runs to the Zimbabwean because according to the rule books, penalty runs are given if the ball hit something that’s intentionally placed on the field.

As the rain had delayed the match, Zimbabwe, who had won the toss, opted to bat first. They put on 79 runs for the loss of five wickets in 10 overs. Wesley Madhevere was the high-scorer for his team with his 18-ball 35-run knock (with four boundaries and a six).

South Africa’s response came quickly when Quinton played quickfire, scoring 47 runs off just 18 balls with eight fours and a six at an impressive strike rate of 261.11. However, Proteas couldn’t win as rain suspended the match with both countries getting a point each.

Temba Bavuma-led South Africa will now face Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh on Thursday [October 27] at the SCG in Sydney. Zimbabwe will be playing against Pakistan on the same day at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
