Former cricketer cum commentator, Aakash Chopra has made a huge claim about Virat Kohli’s Test batting. Chopra has claimed that Kohli does not find a place in the famous Fab Four which consists of Australia’s Steve Smith, England’s Joe Root, and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson.
The commentator has said that as Kohli’s batting numbers have dropped significantly in the past two-three years, he does not come closer to any of the other three members of Fab 4. Chopra also claimed that Pakistan’s Babar Azam can take Kohli’s place in the elusive list of batters.
“Kane and Joe Root, no question about it. Steve Smith, averaging 50 with six hundreds, no question about him. But David Warner and Virat Kohli, at this point of time, they are not a part of Fab 4. There’s no Fab 4 right now, there’s Fab 3,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel (via News18 Cricketnext).
“You might think of adding Babar Azam’s name in there. But while there’s no doubt that he has scored runs in Test cricket, I don’t think he is part of Fab 4 at the moment. I’m only talking about Test matches here,” said the 45-year-old.
Is Aakash Chopra right in his claim about Virat Kohli?
While it may sound bitter to many Virat Kohli fans, the former India opener is spot-on with his analysis. Virat Kohli has certainly slipped out of the Fab Four and his awful numbers in red-ball cricket in the last two years are a testament to that. The 34-year-old has managed a solitary century in the last four years- from 2020 to 2023.
In these four years, Kohli featured in 25 Tests wherein he got a chance to bat in 44 innings. In these 44 innings, Kohli managed to score a mere 1277 runs with the help of one century and six half-centuries. On the other hand, Joe Root scored 3856 runs in 79 innings with the help of 13 centuries and as many half-centuries.
Steve Smith and Kane Williamson scored 1973 (in 47 innings) and 1745 runs (in 27 innings) respectively in this time period. While the Australian scored 6 centuries and nine half-centuries, the Kiwi batter managed 7 centuries and two 50+ scores.
