T20 World Cup 2022: Aaron Finch to undergo scans; doubtful for remainder of the tournament
Aaron Finch
Australian skipper Aaron Finch’s participation in remainder of the ongoing T20 World Cup is in jeopardy after picking up a hamstring injury in the contest against Ireland on Monday (October 31). He will undergo scans to know the extend of the strain, which would determine his fate.
Finch played a blasting knock after a long time for the Men in Yellow. Opening the innings, he smashed 63 off 44 deliveries with the help of 5 fours and 3 sixes. His knock played Australia post a mammoth total in front of the associate team. A remarkable bowling performance sealed the game to the home side to keep them alive in the event. Finch was adjudged the Player of the Match for his fiery knock.
However, the night didn’t end well for the 35-year-old as he had to leave the field in the powerplay during Ireland’s batting and couldn’t return back. Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade stepped in to act as captain in his absence. This raised further concerns over his fitness, as the veteran has missed multiple games due to hamstring issues.
“Little hammy twinge I think. I’ll get a scan tomorrow. Unfortunately, I’ve had a history with them so we’ll see how it goes. It doesn’t feel too bad at the moment but generally overnight they can stiffen up. We’ll get a scan and get the full results. Very hopeful (of playing Afghanistan) but we’ll know more (Tuesday),” the opener told the host broadcaster.
More concerns for the defending champions
Apart from Aaron Finch, the Baggy Greens also have hatstring concerns in the form of Tim David and Marcus Stoinis. Both all-rounders left the field with a discomfort against Ireland. On top of that, Adam Zampa missed a game after returning position for Coivd-19 test.
Australia are in second position in their group’s points table, having accumulated 5 points in 4 overs. However, their Net Run Rate (NNR) is in negative, unlike their competitors England and New Zealand, who are enjoying a good positive NNR. It might hurt their changes to qualify for the semis of the tournament.

Aaron Finch’s side will play their last group stage match on Friday (November 4) against Afghanistan. Apart from winning the remaining game, their fate in the tournament will be very much decided on the basis of results of other teams. It would be a big blow if they fail to head into the next round, given they enjoyed home conditions.
