After breaking an 89-run partnership between English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, Ravichandran Ashwin became the second Indian bowler to a historic 500 Test wickets at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on Friday (February 16). Crawley became the 37-year-old’s 500th Test wicket.

Ashwin scripted history without playing 100 Test matches as the third Test against England was his 98th Test match. The all-rounder is also the second-highest wicket-taker in Tests as an Indian. The first on the list is former spinner Anil Kumble, who bagged 619 wickets in 132 matches.

Ravichandran Ashwin gives a witty response to Alastair Cook’s ‘deliberate’ remarks

On Day 2 of the third Test, Ravichandran Ashwin’s mistake cost India a five-run penalty. As he wanted to steal a single off Rehan Ahmed’s bowling, he inadvertently ran down the protected area of the pitch.

The Marylebone Cricket Council (MCC) termed this as ‘Unfair Play’, for running on the danger area may affect the pitch. After Ashwin’s mistake, umpire Joel Wilson decided to give five runs to England so that Ben Stokes and Co. started their first innings at 5/0.

After this incident, former English captain Alastair Cook said the veteran all-rounder deliberately did it. When Ashwin was asked about Cook’s remarks after the game on Day 2, the 37-year-old gave a witty response.

If that's how they want to treat it, so be it. I went to (on-field umpires) Joel (Wilson) and Kumar (Dharmasena) and said 'That's pure poor motor skills'. If I was any better, I would have been in the Olympics. Why play cricket?
Ashwin said during the press conference

Also, after Day 3, Ashwin withdrew from the rest of the third Test due to a family emergency.
