Former cricketer Mohammad Hafeez is PCB’s favorable choice for the position of Pakistan Chief Selector. The position has been lying vacant since June this year when the board’s management committee was dissolved.

The PCB had initially tried Shahid Afridi for an interim period but discontinued the former all-rounder after a period of time. The two options for Pakistan Chief Selector were Rashid Latif and Mohammed Hafeez, of which they are keen to go ahead with Hafeez as Latif did not show much interest in the role.

A source from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has informed the PTI that the new Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board’s Cricket Managing Committee, Zaka Ashraf is in favour of making Mohammed Hafeez the new Chief Selector. They said, “Zaka met with former captain, Rashid Latif and Hafeez and spoke to them about becoming chief selector. Rashid was not keen on the job but Hafeez (has) expressed his availability for the job.”

Mohammad Hafeez showed grave interest in taking up the role. The source said, “Hafeez who played 55 Tests, 218 ODIs and 119 T20Is for Pakistan before retiring last year, made it clear that he would like the challenge of working as the chief selector.”

The new PCB’s CMC chairman Zaka Ashraf is yet to take a final call on whether the entire selection committee which was formed by Najam Sethi and Mickey Arthur needs to be changed or should PCB just replace Haroon Rasheed. They mentioned, “It is unlikely the entire selection committee will be changed because of the heavy schedule of the Pakistan team after the Sri Lanka tour as Afghanistan have also confirmed an ODI series in Sri Lanka in August before the Asia Cup.”

The CMC is expected to hold fresh elections and revamp the setup for the future. A new team manager as well as a media manager is expected to be appointed ahead of the ODI World Cup.
