Aiden Markram created World Cup history after he scored a century in 49 balls. The record previously belonged to Irishman Kevin O’Brien, who scored a century in 50 balls against England in the 2011 ODI World Cup.
Markram’s knock had 14 boundaries and 3 sixes. One of the highlights of his knock was when he hit youngster, Matheesha Pathirana, for 24 runs. He hit four consecutive boundaries and finished the over with a maximum.
Along with Markram, Quinton de Kock and Rassie van Dussen both hit centuries. David Miller and Heinrich Klassen also contributed with the bat, scoring 39 off 21 and 32 of 20 respectively. These batting made South Africa score the highest team total in ODI World Cup history of 428. The previous highest belonged to Australia, who scored 417 in the 2015 World Cup against Afghanistan. It is also the first time 3 batters have scored centuries in one innings.
