Along with the stories of rivalry between Australia and England in the ongoing Ashes series, a bizarre story became a big talking point. This was first started by former England skipper Alaister Cook who, on the opening day of the third Test, revealed that Aussie wicket-keeper Alex Carey had a haircut but didn’t pay the barber.
Carey has become a target of brutal slamming since he dismissed England’s Jonny Bairstow which sparked the ‘spirit of cricket‘ debate. He threw the ball at the stumps after seeing Bairstow leaving the crease even before the umpire declared the ball dead.
“The [barber] said, he hasn’t paid,” Cook said on BCC Test Match Special. “It was one of those cash-only ones, and he promised he would have a transfer later in the day, and this was just before he shut. This is a true story, I’m not making it up,” he added.
When the clip of Cook’s claim became viral on social media, the English newspaper The Sun did an investigation and confirmed that the barber Adam Mahmood also claimed the same thing. The barber had told The Sun that Carey left his shop without paying and promised to pay back the A$57 on Monday.
Steve Smith rubbished Alex Carey’s haircut report

After the furore, former Aussie skipper Steve Smith took to the newly launched Threads app to rubbish The Sun’s report. Cricket Australia also confirmed the same.
Smith wrote: “I can confirm that Alex Carey has not had a haircut since we were in London. Get your facts right The Sun.” Cricket Australia stated that Carey had not had a haircut since the World Test Championship (WTC) Final.
After Cricket Australia and Smith’s claims, Alaister Cook apologized for spreading that rumor. “A case of mistaken identity, so I apologize for the mistaken identity to Alex Carey.“
Meanwhile, England have scored 27 runs in their second innings, needing 224 runs now to win the third Ashes Test. Australia currently leads the five-match Test series 2-0.
