Alex Carey was 15 when he was the victim of the said run-out fashion during his first match in Adelaide Premier Cricket. Young Carey was very disappointed with his dismissal and had to learn the hard way to keep his foot inside the crease at all times. There may not be a direct link between his dismissal and the one of Bairstow but that incident made Carey believe that this was indeed well within the rules of the game.

While talking about what was in his mind before and during the Jonny Bairstow dismissal, Alex Carey said, “We were switched on to the fact that it was a bouncer plan and it felt like Johnny was … getting out of the way, he wasn’t playing any shots. When he ducked, obviously his first movement was pretty much out of his crease so instinctively I grabbed the ball, threw the stumps down and the rest is history.”

On how he and the team dealt with what came after that, Carey said, “From our point of view, we’ve all got each other’s backs and we’ve all supported each other. There’s some nasty stuff being said but it is the Ashes, and there was nasty stuff said before that as well. I feel really well supported, and I think the whole group does.”

Bairstow’s dismissal was not taken well by the English media and they continued to portray Alex Carey as a monster. In Cricket Australia’s media release, Carey also opened up about how his wife and kids dealt with it.
