Winning the toss, Gujarat Titans chose to bat first but the decision proved to be a bad one as Tim Southee and Umesh Yadav made sure to stop the batsmen from hitting huge ones. On the second over, GT lose Shubman Gill from a delivery of Southee.
Hardik Pandya, the next batsman then played another half-century knock (his 3rd in IPL 2022) of 67 off 49 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes. But in the 2nd ball of the 17th over, Southee got hold of Gujarat’s big fish. Southee delivered a back of a length, on the body and slower in pace. Pandya didn’t look comfortable there and hit it with a poor timing. Rinku Singh made no mistake there with a brilliant catch after diving. The wicket of other batsmen then started falling quickly.
But in the last over, Andre Russell awed everyone and helped KKR to restrict GT’s innings from a high score. In the first ball of his over, Andre Russell grabbed Abhinav Manohar’s wicket. He was on a hat-trick when he sent back Lockie Ferguson in the next ball, but couldn’t get his hat-trick. But in the 5th ball of the over, he got his 3rd wicket of Rahul Tewatia which is also followed by Yash Dayal’s wicket in the last ball of GT’s innings. Andre Russel scalped 4 wickets in a single over by giving just 5 runs.
As Andre Russell picked up 4 wickets in a single over, he also became the first bowler to scalp 4 or more wickets off the only over in men’s T20 cricket.
