“As you get older, you mature as a player” – David Miller opens up on dealing with failure over the years in IPL

David Miller

Gujarat Titans batsman, David Miller has enjoyed a stellar season with the debutant franchise this season. At 449 runs, he has enjoyed his best season in the IPL this year with the bat, beating his previous high of 446 in 2014. However, while this season has been a turn around for Miller, things weren’t always so sweet for the South African cricketer.

David Miller rose to fame on 2013 when he smashed a 38 ball 100 for the Punjab Kings. He followed those exploits in 2014 as well, earning himself the nickname, ‘Killer Miller’. However, IPL through 2016 to 2021 hasn’t been all that well for Miller. Miller endured difficult years being in and out of teams and many labelled him finished in the IPL. David Miller spoke to ESPN Cricinfo as he opened up on his difficult years in the IPL.

“I haven’t felt backed at all” – David Miller on having bad seasons as a player

Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, the 32 year old said, “As you get older and play more cricket, you mature as a player and understand how to deal with failure and what works for you as a player. All these come with experience and I have been in the IPL for 12 years and 14 years in professional cricket. So I should know my game by now and I feel like I am in a place where I am enjoying taking on certain roles and challenges and loving being part of this successful team.”

He added, “I have never really felt like I have been a player who struggled against spin, but it is an area I had to improve and in the last three-four years, I have changed my mindset against spin. The last four-five years in the IPL – I had a bad season in 2016 – and since then I haven’t really felt backed at all. It’s the nature of the IPL in the sense that there are a lot of overseas players and only four can play. So very understandable for teams to think like that.”

“I had to go back and work on my game and try and find a way to keep going. Though I felt good playing for South Africa, domestic teams in South Africa, but it’s about trying to find the gap between opportunity in a team and that’s what’s happened this season.” David Miller ended the interview saying that he has felt really backed by the Gujarat Titans franchise. He’s been allowed to settle in and express himself on the pitch, which has been helpful in him putting up good performances for the side.
