The 2023 Ashes series was no different than any Ashes series in the past. There were sledging, controversies, and undoubtedly thrilling matches. But post the fifth Test, England players reportedly denied socializing with the Aussies for the post-match drink sessions at The Oval in London on Monday (July 31).

Cricket reporter Bharat Sundaresan posted on Twitter that the Aussie players waited in the dressing room for the drink session and even some of them continuously asked the English players for the same, a couple of times, but found their door closed from inside. After waiting for a while, Aussie players left the ground.

The speculation regarding the same started when England coach Brendon McCullum declared he won’t be having drinks with the Aussies after that infamous Jonny Bairstow incident. Bairstow was dismissed by Aussie keeper Alex Carey when the former left his crease even before the ball was declared dead and this sparked the spirit of cricket debate.

Ben Stokes issues clarification

Now English skipper Ben Stokes wasted no time to clarify what actually happened. He wrote that due to multiple events, the wrap up took longer than usual and that’s why instead of the dressing room, they decided to meet in the nightclub.

To clarify…Our wrap took longer than expected because of multiple last-time events. We decided to meet up in the night club than the dressing room,” Stokes wrote on Twitter.

This Ashes, meanwhile, was tied between the two teams 2-2 with Pat Cummins and Co. retaining the urn. Though the visitors were on their way to winning the fifth Test, Chris Woakes’ four-wicket haul helped his team bundle out the Aussies for 334 to win the match by 49 runs. Australia won the first two Tests, England made a comeback in the third Test and almost secured the victory in the fourth one had not rain played spoilsport.
