“Selection of the team is not my job,” Ravichandran Ashwin claims he can’t be first-choice spinner in overseas Tests due to Ravindra Jadeja’s batting form
For India's World Test Championship showdown with Australia, Ravindra Jadeja replaced Ravichandran Ashwin in the final lineup.

Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s finest match-winners, has found himself in the middle of a baffling selection problem when it comes to overseas Test matches. Despite of being an outstanding bowler and a proficient batsman, Ashwin is frequently passed over for Ravindra Jadeja during Test matches in SENA nations. Even in the most recent World Test Championship final against Australia, Ashwin was all set to take the field, but Jadeja edged him out for the sole spinner’s position.
Ashwin’s absence from crucial international matches has raised several concerns. India’s tendency to opt for four-seam bowling has resulted in a direct competition among Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for the spinner’s position, with Jadeja typically being the preference.
Since 2018-19, Ashwin has undergone a mental and physical transformation, concentrating on positively contributing to the team’s balance whether he is on the field or not. Ashwin emphasized his commitment to India’s success while acknowledging Jadeja’s enhanced batting proficiency as a reason for him being chosen in overseas Tests.
In the subsequent games, especially against the West Indies, Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), and Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) division matches, Ashwin made an overwhelming statement. His perseverance and team-first mentality continue to shine, showcasing him as an outstanding team member eager to contribute in any way he can.
Ravichandran Ashwin says the selection of the team is not his job, on not being in India’s 2023 ODI World Cup squad
Ashwin has maintained a practical and optimistic attitude towards this. The veteran all-rounder was an unexpected inclusion in Team India’s preparations for the 2022 T20 World Cup, which remain his final appearance with the white ball in national colors. Ashwin’s last ODI appearance occurred during the South Africa tour in early 2022, before which he had not played since 2017.
“I don’t think like that, because the selection of the team is not my job. I had decided long back that I would not think about stuff that is not in my hand. I am honestly in a very good space in terms of life and my cricket and I try to keep negativity away from my thought process,” Ashwin said.
The upcoming ODI World Cup will be contested in the subcontinent, and given Ashwin’s experience and the unstable form of the other spinners in the squad, he is a strong candidate for selection. However, he doesn’t think about his place in the World Cup’s grand scheme.
