The inaugural U-19 Women’s World Cup is underway and the first match itself produced an astounding result. Bangladesh defeated Australia by seven wickets at Willowmoore Park, Benoni on Saturday (January 14). By doing so, they created history by defeating Australia at any level of an ICC tournament.

Australia were the favorite to win without any difficulty, simply because their senior team is formidable and the best in the world right now. But they were stunned by Bangladesh‘s disciplined bowling.

Australia won the toss and decided to bat first. Claire Moore slammed a half-century, scoring 52 runs from 51 balls before Rabeya Khan was dismissed with a catch by Leky Chakma.

Ella Hayward scored 35 runs off 39 balls and lost her wicket to Marufa Akter. Apart from these two batters, others failed to even reach the 30-run mark as Australia could reach 130/5.

The target was easier to chase, but Bangladesh in their chase did not get off to a good start as opener Misty Shaha fell for a duck off McKenna. Later the other opener Afia Prottasha scored 24.

Skipper Dilara Akter contributed the most runs for the team with her 40-run knock from 42 balls, including seven fours. Jharna Akhtar and Sumaiya Akhtar stitched a 61-run stand from 42 balls. Both the batters scored 23 and 31* runs respectively as Bangladesh chased away the target in the 18th over and won the match by seven wickets.

With this win, Bangladesh received two points and now have occupied the top position on the Group A points table. Other teams in Group A are the USA and Sri Lanka and their match is underway.
