Many expected England’s tour of India to be Bazball’s toughest Test. Previously playing on pitches that supported the pacers, and to an extent the batters, they now faced the dry tracks of India. The pitches usually were the toughest to play, with many traveling teams unable to play spin. But Bazball has now won their first Test in those conditions, with captain Ben Stokes calling it their “greatest triumph”.

Winning the toss, England were bowled out within 65 overs, managing 246 runs. India got a massive lead of 190, with integral 80s by Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja. Forties by KS Bharat and Axar Patel got India to a massive score of 436.

Ollie Pope almost scored his second double century, but missed out by four runs. His innings ensured England scored 420 runs on the board. Along with Pope, innings by Ben Duckett and a late fight by the tailenders, they put up a target of 231 runs.

Debutant Tom Hartley, who had conceded 2/131 runs in 25 overs in the first innings, was the architect of their victory as he picked up seven Indian wickets. Most Indian batters failed to tackle the spinners, losing their wickets by either getting bowled, LBW or caught by the close-in fielders.

In the post-match presentation, Rohit Sharma said the loss was a collective failure and he expected Mohammad Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah to take the match till the 5th day. Ben Stokes claimed this win as his greatest triumph since becoming England captain.

Since I have taken captaincy on, we have had a lot of fantastic moments. This victory is probably 100% our greatest triumph. It's my first time coming here and being a captain. I am a great observer of the game. (On Pope’s 196) The situation we found ourselves in, the shots he played, 190 on such a wicket, he was able to manipulate the field, that's the greatest innings ever played in the subcontinent by an English batter.

Fans can’t hold back anger as India go 1-0 down

On X (formerly known as twitter), many fans were unhappy with the loss. Many felt India threw away the match, especially when they had the massive lead of 190 runs. Other were critical of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy and the performances of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer.
