BCCI announces deadline for WIPL player auction resgistration

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sent guidelines to the women cricketers for the inaugural season of Women’s IPL (WIPL). The Indian players are needed to register online to enter the Player Auction Register before 5 PM IST on January 26. The auction is slated to take place in February.

The name of the five franchises is yet announced. These five franchises will shortlist the names of the player to form the ‘Auction List’ of the players who will then go under the hammer.

The base price, which is termed as a ‘reserved price’ for the capped Indian players is at INR 30 lakh, INR 40 lakh, and INR 50 lakh. For the uncapped, it will be at INR 10 lakh and INR 20 lakh. Players will be registered with their state associations and not through their agents or managers.

Please note that, at this stage of the process, BCCI will only deal directly with the State Associations and at no time will have any communication with player agents or managers. Any failure by a player to abide by this condition will (unless BCCI in its sole discretion decides otherwise) result in the player’s name being withdrawn with immediate effect from the Auction Register and/or Auction List (as appropriate),” a BCCI communique said.

According to the Invitation to Tender (ITT) of the WIPL, the revenue-sharing arrangement between BCCI and franchises will be 80-20 in the first five years. It will be 60-40 in the next five years (from 2023-27). From 2033, it will be at 50-50. In the IPL, the revenue sharing is currently at 50-50 but previously the same process, as that of WIPL, was followed when IPL started.

The media rights auctions will take place on January 16. BCCI invited bids last month for the league from 2023 to 2027. The Women’s IPL is likely to be called the Women’s T20 League and it will replace the Women’s T20 Challenge. It’s likely to get underway from the first week of March this year.
