The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday (4 July) announced the appointment of former India all-rounder Ajit Agarkar as the new Chairman of the Men’s Selection Committee. Agarkar succeeded Chetan Sharma who stepped down from the role back in February this year.
The 45-year-old becomes one of the high-profile names who have served as the BCCI Chief Selector. Agarkar’s appointment has been one of the most talked about topics in the Indian cricket fraternity in the past few hours. While fans relished this decision from BCCI, experts shared their views about Agarkar taking charge as the BCCI Chief Selector.
Commentator cum analyst Harsha Bhogle reckoned it was a terrific decision from the BCCI while hailing Agarkar for his honesty and boldness. “I will tell you one thing about Ajit Agarkar as selector. He will be diligent and honest. He might have strong opinions but they will come from a position of strength. I think it is a very good move,” tweeted Bhogle.
The other key point of discussion was Agarkar’s salary as the BCCI Chief Selector. A few reports in the media claimed that the lower pay package offered by BCCI to its Chief Selector kept big names away from applying for the post. However, as per reports, the Indian cricket board has now hiked the package.
How much will be Ajit Agarkar’s salary as BCCI Chief Selector?
While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier paid 1 crore to its Chief Selector on an annual basis, the apex cricketing body has increased the package threefold for Agarkar. The former India all-rounder will now earn 3 crore per annum as his salary for the BCCI Chief Selector post.
However, as per reports, the Indian cricket board is yet to take a decision on whether to hike the salary of the other four members of the Selection Committee. Notably, the four BCCI selectors earn 90 lakhs per annum as their remuneration. Currently, Shiv Sunder Das, Subroto Banerjee, Sridharan Sharath, and Salil Ankola are part of the selection panel.
