A few days before India played their first match of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, it was reported that Shubman Gill had tested positive for dengue. He was forced to miss the match against Australia in Chennai, and it now looks like he will miss India’s fixture against Afghanistan as well.
In a new statement released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, they have confirmed that Gill will not be traveling to Delhi to play against Afghanistan on the 11th of October. He will be staying in Chennai, where he will be under the supervision of the medical team. Gill and the medical team will be working towards recovering Gill to full fitness. He was hospitalized due to a drop in his platelet count, which didn’t allow him to travel to Delhi with the Indian team.
India will travel to Ahmedabad from Delhi to face Pakistan on the 14th of October. Ishan Kishan had opened in the absence of Gill against Australia, but had gotten dismissed for a golden duck. Kishan will open against Afghanistan as Gill hasn’t yet recovered from his dengue.

Shubman Gill’s ODI run 2023 so far
Since the start of the year, Shubman Gill has had a dream run in ODIs. After being fixed as an opener, the 24-year-old has scored 1230 runs in 20 innings, with an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03.
In those 20 innings, he scored five centuries. That also included a double century against New Zealand on 18 January at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Hyderabad. He further scored centuries against Sri Lanka, West Indies, Australia and Bangladesh. He also has scored five half centuries, with one coming in the 2023 Asia Cup.
India went into the World Cup without an important player like Gill, but still are considered favorites due to their strong squad depth. India will play Afghanistan next on 11th October in the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Their match after that will be against their biggest rival, Pakistan. The two teams will face each other in the Narendra Modi Stadium on 14th October.
