After the sensational sting operation on Chetan Sharma which saw him stepping down as chief selector, Sundar Das is handling the responsibility of the job on an interim basis. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is still searching for a permanent chief selector.

Why no big names in Indian cricket have applied for the national selector’s job? Over the years, no big names could be seen handling the duty of a chief selector. The annual salary of the chief selector is Rs 1 crore while the rest of the four selectors get paid Rs 90 lakhs.

The last time reputed names from the Indian cricket fraternity took up the job was between 2006-2008 and 2008-2012 when the top post was headed by Dilip Vengsarkar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth respectively.

As per a BCCI official, a chief selector gets a low payment as compared to what they used to get during their playing days. Though they could be seen behind the mic doing the commentary job, one rarely gets to see these notable names doing the selector’s duties. The BCCI official recalled that legendary India opener Virender Sehwag was once asked to become a head coach.

During CoA’s time, Viru (Sehwag) was asked to apply for the head coach’s job and then it went to Anil Kumble. It is unlikely he will apply himself and also the pay package isn’t something that will be financially viable for someone of his stature,” the BCCI official told PTI.

The BCCI official opined that if the board pays a chief selector at least Rs 4-5 crores, it may not prevent the former cricketers from applying for the chief selector’s role. “It is not that BCCI can’t pay a chairman of selectors at least Rs 4-5 crore. It can actually solve a lot of these conflict of interest issues which prevent prominent players from even thinking of coming into selection committee,” the source added.
