The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) deal with the anger of the fans whenever they ignore a batsman like Sarfaraz Khan who has been scorings runs consistently in Ranji Trophy. In the last three Ranji Trophy seasons, the Mumbai batter scored 928, 982, and 656 runs respectively. He averages 79.65 in just 37 matches. When the board announced the squad for the Test series against West Indies, Sarafaz’s name was still missing and so there were again hues and cries on Twitter.
A BCCI official recently revealed that though the board understands why the decision angers the fans, he disclosed the two reasons on grounds of which Sarfaraz wasn’t selected. The first season is his fitness which is not of “international standard“. The BCCI official suggested the 25-year-old shed weight and become lean and fit.
“Are the selector’s fools to not consider a player who has scored 900 plus runs in successive seasons? One of the reasons is his fitness which isn’t exactly of international standard,” the BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity. He then disclosed another major reason which now stirred controversy.
“His conduct on and off the field hasn’t exactly been top-notch. Certain things said, certain gestures made and some incidents have been taken note of. A bit more disciplined approach would only do him a world of good. Hopefully, Sarfaraz along with his father and coach Naushad Khan will work on those aspects,” he added.
How Sarfaraz Khan behaved when ex-chairman Chetan Sharma was watching from the stands?
The incident happened this year during Mumbai’s game against Delhi in a Ranji Trophy match. Ex-BCCI chairman Chetan Sharma was in the stands watching the game.
Sarfaraz’s celebrations after his hundred, by pointing toward Sharma, did not go down well with the apex board. Last year also, during Mumbai’s final match against Madhya Pradesh, Sarfaraz’s behavior irked MP coach Chandrakant Pandit.
