He missed his first Test in 2018, when India played Afghanistan at home. He was supposed to play County Cricket for Surrey to prepare for their tour of England, but was ruled out due to a neck injury.
He then missed a majority of the 2020/21 Border Gavaskar trophy due to the birth of his daughter Vamika. He played the first Test in Adelaide and left Australia for home. He once again missed two Tests in the next year, taking a break against New Zealand and sitting out one due to an injury.
He played all Tests India had in the next two years, but the series against England will be the first one he has missed. Many awaited him to face James Anderson, a well known rival of his.
