Recently the BCCI had announced that they wanted to prioritize the longest format of the game, Test cricket. According to reports, they had increased the match fee to play in Tests and asked their players to make themselves available for all domestic matches

While many thought this prioritization of red-ball cricket was only with men’s cricket, the BCCI announced a new tournament for the female cricketers. For the past 6 years, the BCCI did not hold any Women’s First Class matches. Even then, the matches lasted for two days.

Now they have introduced the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy, which will be played in Pune from 28th March to 11th April. There will be five matches, with each match being for three days. The tournament will kick off with East Zone playing North-East Zone and West Zone playing the Central Zone. North Zone and South Zone have been placed in the semi-final thanks to a draw done beforehand.

This is another step the BCCI has taken to improve the women’s cricket team. In the past 6 years, they had not played a single domestic WFC match, but played four Tests from 2021 to 2023, winning two and drawing two.

India’s record in Women’s Tests

India Women played their first Women’s Test match in 1976 against West Indies in a six match series. All matches were of only three days, and the series was drawn 1-1. In the next 24 years, India played 9 more series, drawing six and losing three. In that 24-year period, India failed to win a single WTest.

Their 2nd WTest win and first series win came in 2002, when they beat South Africa in Boland Park, Paarl to win the one-off Test match. Since 2006, India have not lost a single WTest, winning 5 out of 8 Test matches they’ve played. By the end of 2023, India hosted England and Australia for one-off Tests, winning both of them.
