On Saturday (March 9), soon after India’s victory in the fifth Test against England, Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), announced a historic scheme to promote Test cricket in India. The board will spend an extra Rs 40 crore to reward those who are playing Tests regularly.

This landmark decision from the BCCI came after they decided to make Ranji Trophy participation mandatory. The scheme, ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ will give Rs 45 lakh to those cricketers who feature regularly in the red-ball international.

Test cricketers in India get Rs 15 lakh for every match they play. The players featuring in more than 75 percent in the Tests will get Rs 45 lakh extra per game, while those who are in the squad but not in the playing XI will be getting Rs 22.5 lakh extra per match.

I am pleased to announce the initiation of the 'Test Cricket Incentive Scheme' for Senior Men, a step aimed at providing financial growth and stability to our esteemed athletes. Commencing from the 2022-23 season, the 'Test Cricket Incentive Scheme' will serve as an additional reward structure on top of the existing match fee for Test matches, set at INR 15 lakhs.

BCCI terminated Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan’s contracts after they ignored Jay Shah’s order

In February this year, Jay Shah gave warnings to Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer for not featuring in Ranji Trophy matches for their respective teams. As the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) is around the corner, Kishan and Iyer started training for it.

Shah warned the youngsters of “severe implications” if they don’t make themselves available for domestic cricket. But as the duo did not play, the BCCI terminated their central contracts.

Kishan has not played for India since November 2023. Iyer, on the other hand, was dropped from the India-England Test series due to poor form.
