Ranji Trophy used to be India’s premier tournament before the start of the IPL. Players used to work hard to ensure they were available for their Ranji teams, often regarding the tournament as a way to get into the national team. Even Indian legends used to be available for the tournament when there were no international matches, Sachin Tendulkar being a prime example.
After the introduction of the IPL, many players focused on their white-ball game, aiming for an IPL contract. Even international players used to skip Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments. Seeing the attitude of these players towards the oldest format of the game, they have now decided to take action according to a report by the Times of India.

The BCCI will be instructing all players to be available for their domestic sides whenever they are not playing international cricket. The players will only get an exception if they are unable to play due to injuries or if they are in the NCA. This move was done after they noticed many players getting in “IPL mode” during January, like Ishan Kishan.
In the next few days, all the players will be communicated by the BCCI to play for their state team in the Ranji Trophy, as long as they are not on national duty, with only those who are unfit and recovering at the NCA being granted an exemption. The Board isn't too happy with certain players already in IPL mode from January. The source told TOI
Dhruv Jurel to be awarded Test debut in Rajkot
KS Bharat has been in hot water due to his poor batting performances since the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Being one of the best players in the Ranji Trophy, he has been unable to replicate his performances at the international level. In the seven Tests he has played, he has managed only 221 runs in 12 innings, averaging 20.09.

Due to his poor performances, the Indian team management will be replacing him with Dhruv Jurel in the third Test in Rajkot. He announced himself in the IPL, but has had a great time playing First Class cricket as well. In 15 First Class matches, he has scored 790 runs with an average of 46.47. He has taken 36 dismissals as a keeper so far and has one First Class century.
Along with Jurel, Sarfaraz Khan will be making his Test debut. He will now come in after Shreyas Iyer was dropped from the Test side.
